Artemisia californica 2c

Pain: California Sagebrush (Artemisia californica)

The California sagebrush has been used by Native Americans to treat pain. This herb has different compounds that target different pain receptors which contributes to its efficacy. In contrast, modern medications typically are designed to isolate one compound and have only one target. The most effective pain management strategy, however, is using a more multi-modal approach by combining various behavior therapies with medications targeting various pain receptors.

The medication made from California sagebrush is prepared in the form of a liniment (liquid or lotion) and is applied topically. It is applied to the affected area of pain and can either be rubbed on or sprayed. Pain relief can be expected within 20 minutes and can last for 2-3 hours.
